P-44 trying to date - catalogs, specs don't line up

Post by edwinnel »

I bought a used P-44. It is a honey burst, flame maple top over a mahogany body. I've looked through all the catalogs and the only burst option I see listed is in the 2003 catalog, which lists a tobacco burst which looks like this:

. Here's my guitar with honey burst:

The other years of the catalog show natural mahogany or solid for the P-44, not burst options as far as I can tell.
But my headstock SN doesn't match up with year 2003 according to the info I find on this forum. Here's the headstock and SN:

Anybody have any ideas or guidance on dating this fantastic guitar? Thanks in advance, :)

I am inclined to think that those are 2009 instruments given the P before the serial, which was a USM-era thing with serials. The import models likely deviated in terms of the colors reflected in the catalog.
