P90s

Post by Notes_Norton »

There is more than one right way to make music.

I played P90s exclusively for over a year. I had a Gibson ES330 and an LTD Less Paul (pun intended) that I put GFS Mean 90s in.

After playing nothing but P90s, everything else just sounds dull. The guitar doesn't respond to the variations of my picking on any other pickup other than the P90.

For my custom-built MaxxFly, I had US Music put Seymour Duncan P-Rails on the guitar. This might be an option for you. If you get the triple-shot rings along with the pickups, you can get P-90. Rail, Series Humbucker and Parallel Humbucker sounds. The P90 and Humbucker sounds are excellent, the Rail is a little weak.

The P-Rails fit in a normal humbucker routing.

The P90 is the bacon of pickups. . . everything tastes better with it!

Hey Notes My #1 guitar is a '64 Gibson ES-330 TD with P90's too! Bought it new (yikes!)
I played it live and in the studio for years so I guess it's in my DNA at this point.

I have a few other P90 equipped guitars as well, including an Aria Pro II TA60 into which I too put a pair of GFS Mean 90's! Great sounding pups, love 'em.

HB's are great too but something special happens when the P90's are plugged in ya know?

Here are my other P90 guitars

I played the Gibson for over a year, got a gig on a deck over a salt-water lagoon and didn't want to abuse the Gibson so I bought the Casino. When I got my custom Parker with Duncan P-Rails, I gave the Casino to Mrs. Notes (it's still in the family).

I put the black pick guard and witch hat knobs on the Casino because I think it makes it look better. I like the Gibson better for the high fret access.

I got spoiled with P90s. The variety of attacks, the pure tone, and the response to my picking are much more than they are with any other kind of pickup. Playing a humbucker is like putting a mute on the strings and turning the volume up to compensate.

But I'm sure others prefer other pickups. There is more than one right way to make music.

Beautiful guitars Bob!

Here's my 1964 ES-330TD (click to enlarge):

Bought her new, and she's been my #1 guitar for 57 years.
I don't know how I was smart enough at 19 yrs old to have bought it but I did. . .on the "never never" plan. 'Thought it would never be paid off!

Frankly, it's market value now scares hell out of me.
